A Poem a Day, Week Four

 Week 4: Poem a Day Challenge January 22-28, 2022

Welcome to Sifting the Rubble's weekly poetry podcast.  I am Emily Gibson, the writer of these poems.   Here we are, week 4 of my personal challenge to write a poem every day for 2022!   I am thoroughly enjoying this process.  While I am striving to write a poem each day, I am missing the process of revision and refinement that I have purposefully put aside, in order to build a habit and stretch myself as a writer.  However, I am putting together a poll so readers can vote on the poems that might go through the revision (the re-seeing!) process. Will post that poll next week after all of January's poems are complete.  :)

This week's poems are drenched in the landscape of central Oregon, where massive hoarfrosts brought so much, visually to the dry barren landscape, and the mountains continue to put on a show that just begs to be captured in poetry.  I am discovering how much of a "nature poet" I am. Trying to make the beauty of this world more accessible to others, as a photographer would do.   I see the world like a photographer poet, perhaps?

I hope you enjoy this week's offerings!  If you would like to receive an email reminder each week, when the new poetry collection is published please email me at blueheronms@yahoo.com and I'll put you on my private, my-eyes-only list.  :)

Thanks for reading!

:) Emily

A Poem a Day: Week Three

 Week 3: Poem a Day Challenge January 15-21, 2022

This week I attended two events, both on the same day!   One was a poetry workshop put on by the Deschutes County Library, with Paige and Paige.  The workshop focused on poetry forms connecting to photographs.  Two of this week's poems came from that workshop, Mt. Rainier (photo poem, using articles A/An to start each line), and Mt. Bachelor (Concrete Poem, making the words in the poem have a concrete shape related to the topic).  The other event was the Blank Pages monthly gathering, where I read a revised version of The Quilter (from Week 1).

I recognize that each week, there are poems that speak to me and beg for sharing and revision, while others are really for a specific person or myself.   I have visions of collecting the ones that want to be worked on, and then doing that work.  So fun!!

A Poem a Day: Week Two

Week 2: Poem a Day Challenge

Living a writer's life turns your brain ON!  I am finding that I see ideas everywhere, and I feel a need to jot notes, even if just mental ones, throughout the day.  In the morning, I can't wait to get started, and in the evening, I struggle to turn off my creative flow.     This is just what I needed.

The idea of writing a poem a day came from my work with the book, Life is in the Transitions, by Brian Feiler.  You can find lots of info at his website.    In working through his series of questions and his transition toolkit (meant to help people who are navigating massive life transitions or Lifequakes), I notice a theme in my life.  I am a writer, have been a writer since I was very little, when my mom sat my brother and I down and started us on our own journals to document our lives.   When I asked myself the question, "What do you REALLY want to do?"  the answer was WRITE.   Then my friend Tammy told me about this book, Atomic Habits, by James Clear, and how what we do creates our identity, so if we want to be something, we need to DO that something.    And my personal challenge to write every day was born.

I hope you enjoy this week's poems, week 2 of my challenge!

A Poem a Day: Week One

 A Poem a Day for 2022:  Week One, Jan 1-Jan 7

I gave myself the challenge of writing a poem a day for the year of 2022. As a way of setting my intention of being a writer, or of living a writer's life. Because when you write every day, you see the world differently.

These poems are works in progress. They have not gone through the rigorous revision process that poems live for.  Instead, these are 2-day poems.   On day 1, I observe and take note of things, and then write a draft of a poem in the evening.  On day 2, I revise that draft, and put it out there for people to see.  In between the writing and the recording, I can't help but change words! So you may find that the audio version differs a bit from the written version.   Poems are never finished, you just say "good for now!"

Hope you enjoy these.
